For this project, we created a model representing two organ systems. We had to have a function for each system and one function for how they work together. For our project, we chose the respiratory and nervous systems. Our fuctions were how the lungs take in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, how the neurons transmit impulses in the brain, and how nerves transmit signals from the lungs to the brain. We created a model and a presentationm for this project.
Concepts
nervous system - the network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. One of the systems we portayed in our model. neurons - a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell. Beads in the brain represented neurons. impulses - signals sent between neurons. Moving the slinky represented an impulse. brain - an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity. The water bottle represented a brain. spinal cord - the cylindrical bundle of nerve fibers and associated tissue that is enclosed in the spine and connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain. Part of the nervous system. nerves - provide pathways for impulses. The slinkies represented the nerves. respiratory system - a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. One of the systems we portrayed in our model. lungs - make it so that oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed. The bike pump represented the lungs. bronchi - conducts air into the lungs. Part of the respiratory system. alveoli - tiny air sack in the lungs. Part of the respiratory system. trachea - conveys air to and from the lungs. Part of the respiratory system. larynx - hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords. Part of the respiratory system.
Reflection
During this project, I learned a lot. I learned exactly how the lungs and respiratory system works. This was interesting and I now have a deeper understanding of how my body works. I also learned about how systems can interact within the body. There was also many things I struggled with. It was hard to find a connection between the respiratory and nervous systems at first, but then I realized that the nervous system is related to all the systems in the body. It was also hard to work with my group because some people had some trouble focusing. But in the end we figured it out and made our model and presentation.
